How to Write Science Fiction Story

science.fictionScience fiction, A magical and unique genre that has no limits. You can do anything in a science fiction story. You can have aliens arrive with laser guns. You can have a character go off and explore deep space. The possibilities are endless.

Of course, with all these options it can be hard to even know where to start. With someone who time travels. Or possibly with someone being abducted. It could start with friendly aliens warning the people of Earth about an attack that’s coming. It doesn’t even have to have aliens, it could just be a futuristic Earth.

And so, here are the steps to writing an amazing science fiction story.

Have an Idea

Wonderful sci-fi begins with a single idea. But the problem with coming up with an idea, is as people say, “All the good ideas are taken.”

This may sound true, but it couldn’t be any farther from the truth in reality. Quit a few ideas may be taken, but it isn’t that hard to rework an idea and get something new.

for example, if your idea for a story involves aliens taking over the Earth, you may feel frustrated. After all, there have been so many books based off that idea it may seem overdone, but people still read them. All you need to do is change and add new and different ideas for an alien invasion.

Just remember, you don’t have to come up with a never before used idea, all you have to do is add your own flourish to a used idea.

And if that seems impossible, use a prompt or idea from the internet to get you started. It’s a good way to come up with ideas, and as you start writing the rest of the story will no doubt come to you.

Have a Situation

Some ideas sound like good stories, but aren’t. They are written, but when you finish it just comes out awkward and strange, but not the good strange.

The key for this is to learn which ideas are wrong to write, at least for you. If an idea sounds amazing, but you sit down and it doesn’t come out right, it might not be a good idea for you to write.

Once you’ve achieved this, you’ll know what type of situation will be right for your story. Then you can start writing at a quicker rate, and finish sooner.

Inflate Ego

You need to have an ego. I know what you’re thinking, but just trust me. An ego is something every aspiring writer needs, otherwise they would give up and never finish their story.

Now, this doesn’t mean you need to act better than everyone else. In fact, please don’t. It only means that you need to be proud of your writing. Don’t dwell on grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes, or any mistakes.

Instead, be proud of yourself for writing. Be proud when you finish the project. And most of all, be proud that you’re writing something that could make world a better place or bring happiness to people.

Write the Story

There are many ways to write a story. All you really need to know is that no one way works for everyone. Just as everyone is different, so are their writing styles.

Actually writing the story takes three months if you are Stephen King. 6-12 months for most other professional writers. And 1-2 years if you have a job.

Just remember, don’t give up. It may seem hopeless that you’ll ever finish your story, but it’s not. Just don’t give up, and keep at it.

delete That Last Bit

If you are stuck on a part and unmotivated, delete around one thousand words, and start that section over. It may seem irritating, but doing that is guaranteed to help you continue.

And if you are so proud of the section you must delete, don’t be sad. You’ll write something even better.

Just always make sure not give up. It may be discouraging to have to delete a section to move forward, but it’ll be okay.

And look at the bright side, at least you know how to continue writing if you’re stuck.

Avoid Research

As soon as you start to write your story for the first time, don’t research anything. It may sound counter productive, but researching things for the story while writing it is foolish. All it does is tell you if your doing something wrong, which isn’t helpful when writing.

So save research for before you start writing, and for when you’re revising and rewriting the story. And if it seems useless to even be researching, then don’t. It’s your story, and you can do whatever you want with it.

And when you do finish the first draft, feel free to researchers if you’d like to. Just never start researching in middle of writing.

Read Books

Keep reading books. This will allow you to learn about different writing styles. And yes, the writing style of books you read may leak into your own writing, but it’s okay.

It is very important to keep reading books when writing too, because reading will help to expand you own ideas and creativity.

And you don’t have to read only science fiction. In fact, reading all sorts of different genres will help you in the long run with writing.

Deflate Ego

As soon as you finish the first draft of your story, read it. Now, as we must do, you never went back and looked over you story while writing the first draft. But now that you’ve finished it, read the whole thing.

Remember how you were full of ego while writing the first time, well now it’s time to deflate your ego. When reading over your first draft, find every mistake, every loose thread, and take note of it.

Then you begin to rewrite your story, this time fixing all the mistakes. And there you have it. The steps to writing an amazing sci-fi story.
